Thirty years ago, the rule-of-thumb for normal cholesterol levels was 200+age. At that time, there were a number of lipid-modifying drugs, none of which decreased mortality with the exception of niacin, which also happened to decrease overall mortality (i.e. death from any cause).

Fast forward 15 years and the first statin becomes widely prescribed. The statin does a good job of lowering LDL a bit. Problem is, mortality doesn’t decrease. No problem, in the late 1990′s, stronger statins came out which lowered LDL even more, but that darn mortality decrease never materializes. But “scientists” have a solution. Create even more powerful statins, ones that lower LDL by 50%. Some very clever scientists then figure out a way to rig a study to show a benefit in reducing cardiac mortality. However, overall mortality doesn’t improve in men. They’re now more likely to die from suicide, infections, and cancer. Oh, and for women, statins increase overall mortality.

Like I said, scientists are very clever. They designed a study where they give healthy people statins. They claim that the study shows a decrease in mortality after less than 2 years. Yeah! However, a close examination of the study shows that the benefit was beginning to dwindle to nothing if they continued on with their experiment which was originally planned to last 5 years. Oh darn! Some pesky scientists with a soul point this out and the original scientists put their hands over their ears and go Na Na Na can’t hear you.

I remember how my grandmother ate. She raised chickens in her back yard and grew most of what she ate. She was still farming in her back yard when she passed away at 92. She ate eggs every day. ate bacon, and ate the lard made from frying the bacon. What she didn’t eat was anything sweeter than a fruit or any heavily refined vegetable oil.

Although I don’t agree with everything the writer Michael Pollan says, I do agree with him on one point. Don’t eat anything your grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food.

One last thing, 10 years ago, eating a “healthy” nutritionist-recommended diet, my total cholesterol was 200. My HDL was 32, and I was exercising 15 hours a week.

I now exercise less than 4 hours a week, and eating my very “unhealthy” high-fat diet, my total cholesterol is now 180 and my HDL 70. The sweetest things I eat are strawberries and blueberries. I also now consider saturated fat a health food.

  2. I came across your site while searching for more information about some symptoms my son is having. The article pointed me in the right direction and I feel a little bit less stressed after reading. Keep up the good work. I’m going to bookmark the site and look forward to reading more articles.
